Veblen effect, search for status goods, and negative utility of conspicuous leisure

Veblen effect, search for status goods, and negative utility of conspicuous leisure

Journal of Institutional studies, , Vol. 4 (no. 3),
p. 6-21

When expected savings on purchases are greater than the wage rate, the optimal search results in the negative marginal utility of leisure. The search transforms the classical backward bending effect and the leisure becomes complementary to the search. Consumers compensate “bad” leisure by status goods of exceptional quality on markets with high price dispersion. Status consumption complements “bad” conspicuous leisure and produces the Veblen effect as well as the “gardening aboard the boat” effect.

Business ethics and the «effect of the persecuted» - is the uniqueness? (answer to I.V. Rozmainsky and Y.V. Latov)

Business ethics and the «effect of the persecuted» - is the uniqueness? (answer to I.V. Rozmainsky and Y.V. Latov)

Journal of Institutional studies, , Vol. 4 (no. 3),
p. 65-71

Responding to the comments of reviewers, author of the book «The Economic Institutions of the Old Believers» clarifies his position on several issues. In his point of view, the rigid opposition the role of business ethics to «the effect of the persecuted groups» is hardly appropriate, since both factors were considerably significant. The author recognizes the dependence of the ideas of his monograph on the attitudes of M. Weber, which are substantially adjusted in the modern social sciences. However, analysis of some case-study (for example, an old believe economy in Latin American countries in XX century) shows that the convergence of the Old Believers with «Protestant ethic» bearers has some justifications.

On the basis of (i) technological structures and complementary to them institutional structures, (ii) a four-phase course of the technological revolution, with an emphasis on the dynamics of bubbles, the periods of prosperity, the mutual flaws of the financial and industrial capital, (iii) characteristics of markomata, (iv) non-linear development of technologically mixed economy, and so on, a conceptual framework of innovation development of the socio-economic system in a heterogeneous environment is offered.
